Journalists and their sources face increasing challenges and dangers.

If you want to hear from whistleblowers with tip-offs, then making sure they can trust you to keep their communications confidential is essential.

The Center for Investigative Journalism in partnership with The Detail are offering a unique operational and information security training course for investigative journalists and filmmakers.

The sessions will cover:

    • security practices and tools to keep safe from digital threats
    • account security and the basics of encryption
    • how to securely communicate with colleagues and sources
    • modelling and mitigation strategies to deal with physical surveillance
    • threat assessments, hands-on exercises and case studies

The training will be delivered online and in person by some of the world’s leading journalists and security researchers, including Harlo Holmes, Runa Sandvik, and Michael Loadenthal.

Journalists Trevor Birney and Barry McCaffery will speak about their experiences and what they have learnt from their recent police surveillance case.

There is no cost to attend.

It will consist of two in person sessions in Belfast (Monday 23rd and Tuesday 24th June 2025, 11-2pm both days) and two online evening sessions (Monday 30 June and Monday 7 July 2025).
